Baghira wont start

Postby maximus999 » Sun Jan 16, 2011 11:55 am

Hi all, this is my first post on this site and hope all goes well.

Me and a friend both have a baghira blank panther 660cc, we were both driving along and come to a junction and my friends bike just stopped. When he tried to start it would not fire over.
We managed to get it home and are ready to fix it but unsure on what to check. he has had a new coil put on 6 months ago, the battery is strong and kicks over the engine no problem but does not fire up.
Has anyone got any thing they can recommend to check? I have in the past messed areound with car engines like striping cabs, cylinder heads and so on.
I have took the spark plug out and there was a white power on it and the gap is correct for the electrode.

Many thanks Ian.

Anyway, first off, welcome aboard. Pretty new here myself, but had a prob with my Baggy and these guys helped sort it :D

Stupid question: its got fuel in it hasnt it??

If the coil is ok, first off, check the plug is sparking. Take it out, put the HT lead back on and earth they plug on the cylinder or something outside the engine and turn the motor over and see if it sparks.

If it does, probably a fuelling issue: blocked jet or blocked filter in the inlet valve to the float bowl. This means taking the carbs off and stripping them and blasting with carb cleaner.

Had a carb issue with mine recently which was a gummed up primary jet (bike had been standing for 6 months) then a blocked filter. All sorted mow.

It could be a faulty side stand switch.
Good luck, Ed

Hi guys
Thankyou for the reply.

I have today checked for a spark on the plug and it is sparking, whilst checking this i noticed there was no fuel expeling from the spark plug hole (if you now what i mean, as i would have thought there would be some kind of haze coming through but none.)
I have managed to strip the carb out and noticed that there is little black particales in the carb and think something might be blocked but unsure on what to look at.
I have also noticed that there is 2 ports going into the engine from the carb, on one side there is a sort of diaphram which moves up and down with a needle in the middle and on the other side there is a butterfly flap which opens and the needle can be seen. In the past i have only ever seen one port on carbs which the fuel and air go through to the manifold/engine, anyone know why this is different or is it because its a motorbike type design.

I am nearly there, many thanks.

Mate, I had the same problem recently: decent spark but no fuel or smell of fuel when i cranked it over with the plug out.

Have a look at my thread on the subject. Theres some photos too.

The baggy had a twin carb set up, one CV and one flatslide. The left hand side carb does low revs, choke etc, then the right one kicks in later.

Heres the link to the thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4705

If theres black bits there, I'd flush the tank then check the fuel lines and rubber intakes from the airbox and the air filter and box itself and the rubber gasket between the float bowl and carb cos it could be sucking in some rubber-like cr@p from somewhere.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help guys, i got it up and running, many thanks to the last post!! i took the carb off and stripped it dwn and cleaned it with carb cleaner. one last thin, the exhasut (upper pipe) is loose, there is a bracket which goes over to pull it into the engine which has 2 bolts with threds for nuts to pull it in, the bolts are rusted and the nuts have came off and wont thread back on!! does anyone know if the bolts are screwed into the engine and can be replaced.

Many thanks guys.

Glad you're sorted :D

The pipe fixes to the cyclinder with the two studs, held on with a collar.

The nuts and studs are prone to rusting.

The studs can be removed from the cylinder block. they are threaded both ends, one end screws into the cylinder and the other has the bolt on

........... but they will be a REAL BITCH to get out!!
