Starting speed?

Hi,

my skorpion won't start.. I am wondering if the starter motor is giving the engine enough speed? I don't think so but i haven't heard any other 660 start, ever. So I don't know for sure.

That's the same (or even slightly faster) as the turnover speed on my Baghira.

Mine fires if I :

Turn the fuel on, blip the throttle twice, use full choke and no throttle at all, and hit the starter. If it hasn't fired after 3 or 4 seconds, stop and then try again, and she normaly fires straight up. She's usualy stood for between one and three weeks between starts.

Tried some carb cleaner? Never used it myself, but it seems popular for stale fuel.

My 660 Traveller sounds the same i.e. your cranking speed is just fine. Tough to diagnose without more information (has it sat etc.) but I would do the normal troubleshooting. You need spark, fuel, and compression. Fuel is an easy one to check. Drain the bowl... is there fuel in it? Give a good puff of starter fluid in the airbox and crank it again. If it doesn't turn over with starter fluid likely you have no spark or very poor compression.

Besides the "film" critic post,your engine start speed is fine..same as my Skorp.

Do you still have the fuel pump in place? Removing that can be very helpful. Do a search - numerous posts on the subject.

Ok, thanks for the reply's. No worries, I'll have it working again, I was just wondering about the cranking speed, if feels so slow.. But now I know it's just normal.

Don't forget you're turning that big 660 cc piston over so it does sound as if it's struggling. I had a 1064 cc Guzzi and the battery was trying to turn over 2 big pistons with a much larger battery than the standard Skorpion one. Most people have found that removing the fuel pump and putting fuel tap to off and letting the float bowl run dry before laying bike up makes starting easier with a fresh float bowl of fuel. Also replacing standard battery with larger amp/hours helps, there are posts on this.

I had a Kawasaki ER5 for a couple of years and was always impressed how easily it started even after months of no use then I realized that at the end of the day It only had to turn over 2 piddly 250 cc pistons.
