gas cap crap

Postby MattyP » Wed Feb 16, 2011 1:41 pm

Hey all,

Move from WI to MT went very well. Skorp made it without a scratch - thanks to the forum for all the suggestions on that process.

An odd warm and sunny spell has hit central MT, and so I took her out for a ride - it was cut short though by the fact that I could not unlock my gas cap when I wanted to fill up. So, the questions are:

Has anyone else run into this issue?

Is it cool just to drip a little 3in1 into the key slot and work it around?

If replacing is necessary, will I be able to find an after-market replacement or will I have to search around for an MZ original?

THanks again,
Matt

Matt,
I would try a penetrating oil,not 3-1...Try cleaning it with a little spray carb cleaner to loosen the junk followed by the penetrating oil...let the oil set in for a little
while before trying to turn...is it just the lock cylinder hanging up ?

there is no simple aftermarket replacement.
A Newton Aero cap with ring fits the orifice but it must be ordered undrilled.
They offer them with and without a lock. I have one without lock.
If I can find it and you need one, you can have my old cap. Problem is of course that it has a different key, so yiu then two keys.
First try the WD40 or similar lock oil treatment and if that works remember to oil the lock with a good light oil (not the spray can stuff) frequently. Same goes for the ignition lock.

Thanks guys. I just wasn't sure if it was alright to put oil into the lock. Its just the cylendar - probably from a hole in my winter armor that resulted in water pooling up right inside of the lock depression. I dont think i'll need the new one, especially if I can get her greased and keep her that way.

Thanks again.

One thing I have done is fill the lock with wd40, let it sit, use something to slide the plastic (mine is red) door over the keyhole aside get the shop vac in there with the crevice tool. Fill again with wd40, carb cleaner etc. and repeat.

If all efforts fail I would take your bike to a locksmith... they have seen everything and a good one should be able to get the cap off for you with ease (of course do not let the bike out of your sight!) ;-)
