it is not the same.
I would have long since gone over to that side cover because of the better oil filter.

I do not use a gasket at all. I "glue" it one with Loctite 5926.
There is one hitch, tho. Opposite the the shift lever shaft there is a nose on the inside of the side cover to keep that shaft from wandering out. Without a gasket this nose must be shorted by at least the thickness of the gasket. No big deal and without any technical disadvantages.

I "glue" the left sidecover on, too, as well as the small starter gear cover. On the left side, there are no tolerance issues.
The only gasket I use is the one for the chain tensioner. And the copper seals, of course, and head- and cylinder foot gaskets.
To increase the compression a wee bit with the stock engine, I throw out the base gasket ( but not the O-ring!) and use the sealant here, too.
So, there is no reason to buy a gasket set at all. Copper rings are industrial parts and can be had at any auto supply store. The tensioner gasket canbe reused many times if one is careful when removing. A light wipe with grease on the new gasket greatly assists removal without damage.
