Skorpion front end swap

Postby mforza » Sat Jul 23, 2011 2:09 pm

Anybody ever swaped the front end on Skorpion for CBR600 F2/F3 front end?
I know I can use R6 front end but I will have to buy it :) while the F3 complete front end is sitting in my garage.
So I thought that I might be able to use it instead.
If anyone knows what will be involved for this swap please let me know.
Thank you Martin

Yup

First saw an F2 front end on a Skorpion in an old 2WF.com article (can't find it anymore) about 10 years ago. I'm in the middle of putting a 1995 VFR750 front end (same as an F3) on one of my Sports. I had a custum stem made up and pressed into the VFR trip. clamp. Not on the road yet.

I also have most of a f2 front end lying about. The f2 used those ball bearings instead of tapered needle bearings, if I recall 30mm lower and 26 upper, the OD's were 55 and 47, which is same as the katana 600 of which I have plenty cos we swap those into GS500's.

Anyway what are the MZ's skorpion's stem bearing sizes ? Its got ball bearings doesn't it, I mean the non adjustable kind, like a wheel bearing set.

Thanks.

Oh yea google is your/my friend.
30 X 52, common enough, DRZ400 was what I found on the supermono site.
Now I know my upper stem dia on my katana and related FE's of which I got a bunch lying round is 25, while I am yet to find a 25 X 52 needle bearing, 25X52 wheel bearings like the 30X52's on the skorp are common. Bingo. I would still work on finding a tapered needle bearing, no sense doing 1/2 the job.

Cool.

Found the same info. Talked to a guy in moto shop and he says that the bearing should do it.
Let me know how that works out for you!

Doug did it the right way.
Don't mess with the bearings unless you are a very competent tool maker.

Aside from the race track, for the life of me I cannot see anything gained by swapping the OEM RSU fork. And I have done this a few times and with various forks.
You have two possibilities:
1) you take one of several 41mm RSU forks as is (KAWA, Yamaha, Honda...) and stick the staunchions into the OEM tripletrees and use the front wheel and brakes tha come with that particular fork and model.
or
2) as Doug said, you have a new stem that fits the MZ head and bearings machined (or do it yourself in my case) and shrunk into the clamp belonging to the desired fork.

I have done both. the latter several times.
Obviously the first method is far simpler and cheaper.
For street use I would do neither. There is absolutely nothing gained for everyday use from an adjustable, let alone an USD fork. I know from personal experience. Handling and comfort are far better with the OEM Paioli 41mm RSU fork equipped with decent progressive springs such as Wilbers or WP and proper oil and air cavity height. To top that, you have to invest heavily and the street-going qualities will not be improved. Race track, yes, but, again, only with serious investments. And the drawback of any and all probably exchange candidates is the accompanying 3,5" front wheel which the Skorpion does not need. Not on the street at least, and the only real reason on the track is to be able to mount slicks and rain tires which are not available in 110 widths. For racing the alternative and one route taken, is to mount narrower rims and use 125 GP racing tires.
But back to our topic.
Nothing will be improved and lot can be harmed.
Anybody wanting it, I have a KAWA 400 41mm RSU complete with brakes and front wheel. plug and play as it were.
I've not used it. I know why.
Before fooling around with something you will not better, spend the money on a decent strut. THAT will definitely be a BIG improvement.

Sorry to be a party pooper. I have owned 3 Skorpions myself, the first bought 94 one of the first sold in south Germany. I still own one. And the Yamaha SZR as well. most know this. I have raced the beast seriously and used the others in street trim for track days. And I have used all three extensively and for (in Europe) longer travels.
Bottom line. I have a wee bit of experience with the beast.
A lot of what I read in this (and other, believe me!) Forums makes me cringe.

The stanchion swap, suzuki katana, rf600, old first gen GSXR, honda F2/F3 and a 1000 others all will fit into the 41 hole of the skorpion, however nothing that I know of and I am seriously still looking, has the 6 and 1/4 inch spacing of the skorp. The old kat and most pre 95 models of suzuki's are like 150mm, the next gen is 172 or so (6 1/2) OK yea we can make spacers ... however it is infinitely easier to machine stems or even swap in like a 30X30 stem like a GSXR post 2000 ... I am still searching ...

On the katana to GS500 swap, I got it all down to where 1 part was all that was machined. I'd machine it and mail it out to people and they can just bolt it all back on.
However in this swap I want to correct 3-4 other problems in the MZ (atleast my mz) I dont like the "off to the left" ignition lock, getting that to the center I can use a bandit 400/600 guage cluster which I have and love and has temp guage and ... well I gotta get some way of fitting it on a Kat/RF triple. Then of course there is the wheels ... the 96 and later katana/GSXR wheels are all straight 3 spoke and pretty light and still very strong, and they are nice and wide and I got em lying round. One solution which solves all these problems is my goal.

I am in nascar country, cant even toss a triple clamp without hitting a machinist.

Cool.
