Got a ticket.... :( Mirror threads?

Postby chisleu » Mon Jan 23, 2012 3:35 pm

It is really hard for me to tell what the threads are for the mirrors. I've read 10mmx1.25 and 10mmx1.0, as well as I am unable to tell if they are both right handed threads. One appears to be left handed, but it was crossthreaded before I got he bike so I can't tell for sure.

If anyone can offer any help on this, I would appreciate it. I got a $80 ticket today for not having mirrors, which I did not know was the law. I also got a warning for not having my (crappy) headlight on in the middle of the day, which I also had no idea was a law.... Even cars don't have to have headlights on in the daylight... silly.

Thanks!

Some of the two strokes had a coarser thread than the Japanese, my 1989 etz251 has the finer! I think your best options now as you have a stripped thread are either bar end mirrors, or replacement handle bar clamps. Both are available on Ebay, or your local bike shop should be able to provide.
PS. Of course you need your headlights on in the day, you've got to give the blind whatsits somthing to aim at!!!

10x1.25 is standard on MuZs

But it might depend on any aftermarket mountings you might have.

10x1.25 is a very standard size in the japanese motorcycle industry and as sich is found most places today.
In Europe it is atypical indeed, virtually never used. Here 10x1 which can be compared to UNF and the ubiquituous 10x1.5 which compares to UNC.

Brake fittings and similar banjos are normally 10x1, always with european makers like Brembo. But, Japanese brakes stuff is very often 10x1.25.

I assume you are talking about the mirror thread in the clutchlever perch. Get a US aftermarket mirror with 3/8" and put/have put a Heilcoil in there.
Or perhaps M8. there are lots of M8 (8x1.25) mirrors, mostly scooters, so there could be (Harleys?) 3/8" too.

And yes, mirrors are definitely mandatory, even in the States. And so is having the lights on, whether car or motorcycle. Don't know about the Baggis but the Skorpions made for US export had no light switch at all.

equipment tickets

Postby jimc » Tue Jan 24, 2012 10:00 pm

Maybe you already know this and maybe depending on what state you got ticketed in.....
In NY anyway, an equipment violation is a "correctable" offense, meaning if you get the mirrors, lights etc fixed fast (before the court date) , stop by the issuing police station and have an officer verify the fix, they can then squash the ticket.
Had to do this with my kids driving around with no tail lites etc a couple of times.
Of course if you verbally questioned Officer Friendly's motherhood, all bets are off.

FYI : some MZ's with the 500 rotax used 10mm x1.5mm thread pitch.
All Skorps and Baghiras use 10mm x 1.25mm thread pitch.
All were RHD thread. Helicoil it to 10mm x1.25mm is easy with Alu.

or get one of these bar mount mirrors.

Thanks for the replies. We don't have "correctable" tickets here, just warnings. I'm going to go to court and hope that pictures of the mirrors on the bike is enough to get out of the ticket cost. $80+ is stupid for a mirror ticket.

I found some locally since, because of my size, they are useless anyway. Best I can tell, they would have to be 6" above the handlebars and 8" past the handlebars in order to actually function, and with that long of a mount pole, they would certainly shake too much to be really useful. Blah.

At least I'm legal now! Thanks for the input!! :)
