Check List for ETZ250?
A question from an ignoramus. Besides the obvious, wheel bearings, headstock, chain, sprockets, tyres, swing arm, condition of exhaust, lights work. Is there anything special to check for when looking over an MZ ETZ250 with a view to buying please?

Is it charging, are the shock adjusters seized, cluch/gearbox smooth, finds neutral easy, rusty tank interior, have a test run, all niggly possible problems, but all can be sorted.

One thing to look for, is the rear brake working ok, does the leaver move ok, or has the cam seized up? has the liner ovaled and does it pulse when the rear brake is applyed, thats an Mot failure and a new rear wheel or hub can be expensive. Check the intake rubber intake tube for cracks if they go through they can change the fuel air mix and poss seize the engine. In fact check all the rubber parts like the fork leg gaters for cracking & see if you can have a look at the condition of the fork legs underneath, chain guide tubes can be messy and fiddely to sort too.

oh and check the bottom of the main frame member behind the engine for rust/corrosion, its an area that gets overlooked so bad corrosion can be easily missed. The front footrest's are bolted on here, the rear engine mounts, center stand, and swing arm pivot are all in the same area and any bad rusting/corrosion there is a definate bike killer.

My Etz125std (E740 JPG) was so bad, that just after it failed its last MOT test, around 1993, I stood on the footrests in the garage, only to find myself standing on the ground, the footrest bolts having just pulled out of the frame taking a large section of the lower frame with it.... but it had done over 90,000 miles in my care in three years, used to go for mad 24 hr rides across the country at all of 60-65 mph, it once did 75 and seized up when the carb vibrated loose and ran lean for a short while...
