Course Oil Bolt Seal - leg is healing, almost ready to ride

Postby chisleu » Sun Mar 11, 2012 2:22 pm

Trying to get the bike ready for some more riding soon. I had a high side at ~20mph (rear end completely lost traction at 15-20mph because of some dust or something on the road.) I'm getting close to healed up now and it's time to start getting the bike ready to ride.

My bike is in storage so as to keep me from wanting to ride it "just around the block really quick" so I can't measure for myself. I need the measurments or a part number I can use for the oil seals that go on that big coarse oil screw at the front of the frame (where the oil line attaches.) I only have 1 of the two oil seals there and would really like to have 2 new ones when I change the oil so as not to prolong my inability to ride.

Any help is always appreciated! :)

I already purchased a new Avon tire (the old tire was a cheap Chinese tire which may have contributed to the accident.) It is an Avon Distanza AM44 rear to match my AM43 front. I also ordered a 47 tooth sprocket to replace my 50 tooth rear which is FAR too short. The 45 was not enough for me, but the 50 is too punchy and really limits the speed as well as pushing a cruising speed down to 50MPH. Hopefully the 47 will be a good compromise. I also just purchased a "Baja Designs Dual Sport Brake Light Switch - Brembo Hydraulic" which appears to be a M10x1.0 hydraulic brake switch which hopefully will replace my rear brake switch. It's been broken since I got the bike, but I always gently used the front even when using the rear so the light was on either way. I faked my way through the registration by hitting both the brakes at the same time when asked to do the rear brake. :)

Is it not in the "specifications and alternative parts" doc? (I'll check now.) I know I measured them last year and i think i would've added them to the file. But maybe not.

:D

.....PS: Yes, it's there - the Various Sizes and Dimensions section.

Lower oil pipe (frame downtube) sealing ring 16x20x1.5 Al (2)
Lower oil pipe o-ring 11x2-WS 12.097RR (1)
Upper oil pipe banjo bolt sealing rings 14x18 Cu (2)
Upper oil pipe banjo bolt M14x1.5x30
Upper oil pipe o-ring 15x2-WS 12.097RR (1)

Wow thank you. I got scared to open it because it caused some warning in microsoft office. I just opened it in open office without issue =/

I'm still confused. I'm talking about the two that go on the oil hose/pipe fitting (one on each side), through which the banjo bolt goes and then said bolt goes into the frame/oil canister at the front of the bike.

I am so confused! Also, what thickness and metal type should I use as it seems the "Upper oil pipe banjo bolt sealing rings 14x18 Cu (2)" may be the ones I need. 1-2mm seems like it would be good. Copper? brass?

The file is ok. There are no scripts or anything in it, it is plain html. Windows or MS Office gives that warning because your Windows security settings are set so. MS Office? It's an html file, it would be opened with IE or whichever web browser you use. (If you're still using IE, do yourself a favour and get firefox or Chrome, two-three times faster to load pages.)

I thought you meant the large seals used on the oil at the bottom of the front downtube of the frame. Get them all. You will find some at hardware shops that sell nuts and bolts and so on but probably not that big one. I've found that they're narrower than the ones on bikes. (I mean the ID (Inside Diameter) is ok but the OD is slightly less.)

Copper or Aluminium, doesn't matter, but you'll probably find only copper. Big auto parts stores would be the best.

The o-rings, re-use them, no problem. To get those, you would have to go to a seals and bearings place.

I was thinking of an interchangeable parts document. It was definitely a doc file.

Sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words! :)

I'm talking about the two seals in the middle that go on each side of the piece on the left before the piece on the right is pushed through it and into the frame/oil canister thingie! :)

I'm going to order all of them now as I probably have a few weeks of healing to go if I don't get surgery. I rode the bike 100 yards to the corner store to put 1/2 a tank of gas in it because I was worried the little bit of gas in it would become a problem. I guess I might want to change the fuel filter and run some Seafoam through it as well.

I know, it used to be a .doc file - or it had both, but i downloaded it yesterday (here at office) and it was just the .htm file and the image file and...you know, the usual what_files subfolder files. Safe, guaranteed.

The pic...that does look like the big one at the bottom of the frame tube. I made a big mess with it last time. :-/ I can't remember whether or not i did get some from the hardware store. Most people would tell you just re-use them, but i prefer to put new ones - or at least have some new ones in case i do need them sometime.

The petrol, the Seafoam and so on...I wouldn't worry, it's a few weeks, or a couple months. And you've put in fresh fuel now, so...no problem.

Thanks man. I went to advance auto in hopes that they had a part listed online, but it was a "factory order" which took days to arrive and cost a bunch.

They DID however have part 65273 which is an Oil-tite! brand "5/8" / M14 copper oversized" gasket. The oversized is the kicker because it measures 17mm ID and about 22mm OD (eyeballing the OD. I measured the ID at 17.01X MM)

It might or might not work, but I'm not going to continue looking until I find out! :)

I bought a bottle of seafoam as well and I think I'll just put a bit in the tank before I fill up the gas and I also expect it will be OK. The reason I did is it has been about a month since my accident and when I cranked it, it was very difficult to crank. It ran poorly until I put half a tank of gas in it and ran it a bit. I just like Seafoam, if only for the placebo effect.

Seafoam is the dogs...great stuff..
Also over here in the States there is a product from Starbrite which is an enzime fuel treatment that kicks all the ethanol problems...add 1oz to 3 gals first treatment, then 1oz to 6 gal after that..
Workss as advertized....
