Sprockets and chains

Postby Kcfirebolt » Wed Mar 28, 2012 3:48 pm

Hi all. Long time lurker here in need of some help/direction/advice.

I race a Skorpion with AHRMA, and I need new front and rear sprockets.

I've talked with Galen Miller, and he recommends 15 front and 41 rear for most of the tracks that I'll be running this year (RA, Grattan, Barber, and Daytona).

Does any have a suggestion for where to find these? I'm struggling to find a source online. I also need a chain.

Are there other makes/models that use the same sprockets? For example, would a raptor front sprocket work? My bike is a 1996.

Thanks for your help.

I just bought chain and sprockets 15/43 recently for mine...you can find DID ev2 520 just about anywhere I bought 114 links to be sure of length.
The rear 43 tooth I bought out of Texas,I'll look up where, and the counter shaft sprocket I ordered from my local yamaha dealer. I used a JT number for reference.
Look on their web site....for the Mz or SZR..

JT website has diagrams showing dimensions, just a bit hard to find things there.

Thanks guys. I'll check the jt website. I'm grateful for the help.

Gordon, Good to hear from you. I expect every Michigan winter to be just like this one. Are you running RA and Grattan this year?

I've ordered a piston from Galen and a gasket kit. Tried to get sprockets and chains too, but he didn't seem enthusiastic about running down pricing for them, and I eventually gave up. I'll try to run it down a little further before I approach him again.

What gearing do you typically use?

Hi Charles. No RA for me, but I am planning for Grattan. The way AHRMA is doing Barber this year, you have to compete on two different days to qualify, so that will be my two days. I also just read that they'll be limiting the racers to 700 entries per day and there will be a mandatory practice on either Friday or Thursday, or you can practice both days if you want. The drawback is there will be no practice on the race days in order to complete the race schedule. Should be interesting to say the least.
For gearing at Grattan I run 15 front and 41 rear. That lets me get a good run at the checker out of the last turn.
The sprockets I have came from Sprocket Specialties. I got them as part of a package when I bought a spare bike and I don't know if they were custom made or not. I can't find any listing on their website for the MZ. None of the Yamaha numbers match either. The number on the 41 tooth sprocket is 520Z. All the others, 43,42,39,38,37,and 36, have 187Z stamped on them. Maybe a call would sort things out.
You coming back to Flint? If you're there now, there is a school at Grattan this Saturday and an open practice for racers on Sunday. I'll be there Saturday helping out.
See you at Grattan in June?

I'll be in Flint later this week, but I won't be able to get my act together by Saturday. I have my GSXR in Flint, so I'd like to come do a school with you. I need to work on some things. What other dates are you instructing? I need the help. How much are trackdays there?

This is the only day that I instruct. If you already have your race license, I'll be at Grattan on the Friday before the AHRMA race weekend if you need help finding your way around the track. If you want, you can come to the track this Saturday and just check it out without riding. Entry is 5 or 10 bucks for the day.

Okay. I plan to be there Friday before Grattan for sure. Sorry to hear you won't be there before. I get back to Flint on Wed or Thursday. I'm not sure if I can make it out there Saturday or not, but I'll let you know. Thanks for the good counsel. I'll likely need to pick your brain some more before I get this thing sorted. Thanks again.

Do you guys across the pond not have sprocket manufacturers that will work from patterns, even simple two dimensional drawings?
We have loads in the UK.

Yep, we got 'em.
Probably where I'll get the next set...since you can't walk into a shop, say "MZ Skorpion" and get anything other than blank looks...
