Baghira -v- Mastiff Height

Postby funmonkee » Thu May 31, 2012 2:33 am

I've owned a Baghira and know that it's ride height was significantly more than the Mastiff. Now I have a Mastiff I looking to see how the ride height could match the Haghira. A quick check on MCN show the difference between the two is 70mm in favour to the Baghira. Do they have different forks and shock or it is simply a case of shorter dog bones? I have seen riders mention longer forks on the Baghira etc,
I did a quick search for Mastiff v Baghira differences but didn't produce any clear results... viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2447
Cheers

full height has longer forks which are adjustable, longer rear shock and i seem to recall looking through parts manual there may be a difference in the frame,castor/trail measurements and possibly the swing arm,but that may relate to the mastiff models and not baghiras.
mine is the hr enduro model and came supplied with both sets of wheels,i have added the longer front forks which raise the front by about 3" and changes angle of the seat slightly which improves the comfort side of things a bit

Baghira has the Marzocchi forks used on the 95-98ish KTM's, I believe the Mastiff uses the non adjustable Paoili (sp?)

So, it's the fork length and possibly a longer rear shock that determines the difference in ride height between the Baghira and Mastiff models.
Can we confirm that the 'dog bones' are the same across the models? I think I will use shorter dog bones to jack up the rear a little.

be careful with the "jack up the rear a little."

i find these MZ bikes to handle nice but a bit quick in the steering
jacking up the rear may make it bite you on the BUTT

the last time i checked in (dec 4,2007)falling off hurts

Yup I hear what you are saying, but it's an easy mod and I can return to standard pretty quickly.
And yup it does sting a bit... I've came off a Vmax on a ...(wait for it) ....corner - that did 6 ribs and my clavicle ..I could show you the bolts!
Then a few years later come off one of my Busa girls and that did more ribs, internal bleeding and memory loss for days...
TBH the jack up the rear a little will be for looks only...so I might just adjust the rear shock for a few days in stead. I also find the bike sits pretty much upright on the side stand, that worries me so there's another reason to jack it up a "little"...

To the best of my knowledge the Baggy frame is slightly different to the Mastiff one, which is why you can't fit a Baggy high front fender to a Mastiff, the fender will hit the down tube. The Baggy came originally with adjustable forks at the full height and the Mastiff was slightly shorter and had non adjustable forks. Later the Baggy was offered in height reduced (HR) form, which used the shorter Mastiff suspension in, I assume the Baggy frame. Looking at the parts blow ups at Grahams M/cycles the rear suspension seems to be the same apart from the rear shocker.

I have used a Baghira front mudguard on a Mastiff without it hitting the frame, there are two plastic wedges that fit either side of the guard without these it will catch. so the frame may be the same but the change in angle due to different length forks shock and possibly swing arm length?

the frames deffo have different part numbers between mastiff (3621202685 white, 3621202695 black) and baggy (3621201685 white, 3621201695 black) i seem to recall reading an article in the mz riders club magazine detailing the differences between the two bikes

Just had a quick look at the spares in the shed, the Mastiff swingarm is about 20mm shorter with no welded tab for the lower chain guide.

Hi i'm new to this forum but i'm currently finishing up a full restoration on a 2000 Maztiff.

Being 6 ft tall i found d Mastiff a bit too short for me so looked into the conversion to a Baghira. The difference in the two are :

Swinging arm is shorter on the Mastiff
Rear shock is shorter
Front forks are shorter.
1 degree difference in rake (+1 on Baghira)

What i've done is fit XR650 front shocks (same length as Baghira ones but cheaper, more plentiful here in Malta and with added advantage of being fully adjustable with air over oil)
The rear i've used shorter dog links but can only go to 15mm offset ...anything more will hit the swingarm pivot point and cause d shock to bind.

You could fit the Baghira's longer swinging arm provided u have the spoke wheels (which i dont mine are d cast version) and the rear shock.

Regarding the front mudguard u can fit that with no problem... that's what i'm running ! :)
