Need airscrew setting help urgent.

Postby Srinath » Wed Oct 24, 2012 6:57 pm

OK after a 20+ mile run where it stalled 1 time 10 miles out, I could not get it to start back ... so need this help urgent.

My skorpion 660 used to start up fine when cold, run 30-60 sec and stall. It was hard to start till it got cool. So I am hoping to find where you have the air screw set to.

OK the bike has a supertrapp pipe, stock air box and stock filter. It runs great with tons of power, but has been a hard to start.
I suspect it also has a DJ kit in it, but effectively for starts and idle I would assume it was stock ... I would rather it was a bit lean so it will start with choke but not over rich so its carbonising itself.

Cool.

Check the choke is closing fully, as they have a tendency to stick,

5 turns ... OK I will try that.

Anyway update on the bike ...

Got it home on my truck, pulled everything apart ... getting spark, choke closing fine, getting everything, fuses are fine ... it was very clean carb wise. As well as valves and everything else.
Still in over a day of working on it and trying to get it to start ... nothing. It spins over great, just doesn't even try to start. You know how when it fires and partially catches, the piston will get kicked down and it makes a "thunk" at the starter clutch, it does not even make that.

Here is somehting that will make you guys probably never speak to me again ...
I put 1 oz of "Iso heet" in the tank ... however it started and ran the 20+ miles after I did that.

Cool.

Sounds like bad fuel, not an uncommon circumstance these days... just a thought.

I put 1 oz of "Iso heet"

you now have what i call epa crud in your float bowl

its the "Iso heet" all the water and the ethanol all covering up the main jet in the bottom
none of which will burn
welcome to a very BAD load of fuel

OK fine, I actually mistyped ... I dumped 12 oz ...
OK then I have sucked it all out and put it in my GS500  ...
The bloody GS500 got up and ran like a scalded dog running to rape an ape ...

OK fine ... time to get pure gas ...

I pulled the float bowl off ... and it looked bloody clean ... even cleaner than yesterday if you can imagine that. really I cant imagine its this ethanol mix that is causing an issue ... I think its something else ... like a air screw without a spring on it causing it to do some BS ...
Seriously guys, I have done a lot of carburetion work ... I have probably set 300+ carbs off GS500 for people on the gstwin site ... I am actually embarrassed to ask for help on what could be carburetion ... I recently broke the 10 grand mark @ the local dealership get this, nearly all of which was buying jets ... making me by far and away ... the third on the list, and the first 2 are repair shops ...
I can set GS500 carbs that come to me busted, and the owner is complaining of this and that, I set it by eyeball and they run like a swiss watch when refitted ...
Seriously I cant believe this bike is still kicking my ass ...
I would try the pure gas ... but there has to be a solution for the problem ... is the spark weak ? or is it not advanced enough ?

Something is wrong ...

I also replaced a transistor in the ignitor box ... but that was before my epic 20+ mile run ...

Cool.

That guy is clean. Its in a lot of carbs ... its not got fuel flow issues.

BTW the petcock on my bike is non vacuum, is the stock one vacuum ?

Anyway its rather slow flowing also, takes a while, like 20 mins to empty 2 gal ... but of course that is of no consequence till its close to an hour, so I guess I get 45-50 mpg, so 2 gal in 20 min is a 100 miles in 20 min so its like 300 mph which isn't a issue ...

My bet is ... well maybe it didn't like the isoheet at all ...

Or maybe something else is wrong, spark ... but I do have spark ...

Cool.

Here is what happened to me. Bike ran ok went onto reserve and wouldn't restart. Cup of water on the tank, when it was still and upright water settled into petcock resess hence problem, drain your tank completely if haven't already.
All the best

Have you tried ether, starting fluid? If it doesn't hit with ether, its spark.

Old Dog: The "gas" with 12 oz of isoheet is fully drained ... and most of it is in the GS ... ...

Harold: I tried carb cleaner sprayed into airbox. Nothing. I should try starting fluid next, but since I rarely ever have used it I didn't have it on hand.

these bikes with yamaha 660 have an automatic compression release on the cam
if it has malfunctioned this could be the problem
on the atv's here where i live they need the starter to turn motor about 700 rpm
before they start
not got in to my traveller well enough to know much about this
just an idea of what may be..
causing the problem ???? of this one not starting like a lack of compression ???
