Intro: Picking up my New-To-Me 2005 Baggy...

Postby Rhino-1 » Tue Jan 15, 2013 6:46 pm

I've always been curious about MZ' (Mastiff and Baghira), and almost bought one on two separate occasions. Well, one turned up locally at a price I couldn't resist, so I am finally (fingers crossed...) going to have one. It needs a few things (battery, countershaft sprocket nut [?!?!?] and some TLC), but it apparently starts and runs fine. Based on some reading I've done, i'll probably have to tackle the carbs (and where the heck does Keihin get off charging so much for a pair of FCR's?!?! LOL!) and suspension. Already went out on a limb and picked up (on fleabay) an LC4 WP rear shock. FIgured if it doesn't fit it will be easy enough to re-sell. Will ride it for a while first to get a feel for it, but I am really liking the way these things look with modern suspension up front too...

So, if you all don't mind, I'll be visiting this site often. I'm in Southern California, BTW, and have lived in (and hope to return to) Seattle...

Congrats, sounds like you bought the $500 bike I saw posted here today. I was tempted myself to buy it as a spare parts bike. Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome and I'm looking forward to hearing about the shock and seeing lots of pictures!

What lead you to believe the shock will fit? some parts catalogue sleuthing or from others who have done the swap?

I've pulled the carbs off mine and its not that bad, only bit of advice is to get a new float bowl gasket and some new o rings. (the kit doesnt contain o rings for the mix screw but you can use either one or two right sized but too slim rings from an o ring selection box)

Not sure what you mean about the counter shaft nut, this any help?? http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/yamaha-tech/xtz-660-1992-balance-shaft-54988

I just did a bit of Sleuthing--I guess I'll find out when I try it. :)

Yup, I am buying LAKevin's bike (listed on here and on ADVRider.com). I don't mind a bit of a project, and it will be a good companion to my Buell Ulysses.

The nut I'm referring to is the one that holds the front sprocket on (as described in the for sale ad).

Thanks!
