slipstream roller cam chain conversion

Postby catman » Thu Mar 21, 2013 5:38 am

Hard at work on my 05 baghira build.....have most of the important stuff done, or purchased and waiting. As follows: extra cyl. head is ported/KW valves/springs/retainers, Megacycle X-4 cam fitted, (working on removal of auto decomp.), Kheihn FCR 35mm carbs test fit,( no more air box by using Raptor air boots mounted upside down & Raptor intake manifolds), w/a single K&N GSXR 1000 air filter,(has two inlets). Extra cyl. bored to 102 mm and fitted w/11:1 piston, carbon fiber M4 muffler mounted. MUCH weight trimmed from bike by removal of stock fenders/HL mask mounts/grab rails, etc. (have retained HL mask mounted on forks). Now sporting R6 carbon fiber front fender, F4i carbon fiber rear (hugger style) fender, tapered bars, still fabricating my own dash/gauge set up. ZX12R tail light is mounted, along w/DOT legal signals front and rear (non stock). Just received IGNITECH ignition box. Gettng ready to have Falicon rod installed on crank, order nec. stuff for a taller first gear, and of course 700 Raptor counterbalancer drive gear. Now comes the question....is there still a SLIPSTREAM out there to purchase a roller cam chain conversion kit from ? (no response to my e-mails). Will call them directly if I need to, but do they still exist????

Yep.....Seven Oaks, Uk...Martin Sweet....(I believe)....Thanks for the quick response. I will try giving them a call. I was afraid that the economic "downturn" of 08 killed their business (as it did so many small businesses). Will try to put up a post with my results......

Sounds like you'll be roasting some KTM 690's when you get finished. If you haven't already purchased your new rod, I think Barker's is still selling their stroker crank kit and it doesn't require a special piston.

Hmmmmmmm.....stroker crank, huh.....It IS tempting, but I still wanna start this thing with the button...It's funny that you mention Barkers (Bad Axe, MI)....I need to return a call to Tim(?) @ Barkers about a manual compression release conversion that he does. I've seen some pics of it, and it kind of intimidates me, 'cuz it goes thru the cam chain tunnel. I'm not totally sure that it is necessary for my motor as I've planned it. Not sure how much cyl. pressure I'll have with the X-4 cam and 11:1 CP piston yet. I know that a lot depends on valve overlap and cam degreeing from my motor building days drag racing a 78 kz 1000,( and degreeing in my cams in various ways for different power delivery). Of course I will be degreeing in my cam, but with a single cam it kind of limits my available options, unless I go to a custom grind. This bike will be ridden at least part of the time as a commuter, so needs to keep cool also. I also own an 01 Duke w/FCR 41mm carb and Akropovic cans and Ypipe (from KTM's acc. catalog). This is the bike that got me started on BIG singles. And wait that's not all.....So far my favorite is my 06 husaberg FS650c (street legal)....so I guess I've got other choices, but after working at a Yamaha dealer, I fell in love with that delicious 5 valve cyl. head. There is so much unrealized potential in MZs 660 YAM based bikes, that I had to unlock at least some of it....stroker crank............hmmmm

From what I've read, you won't need a decomp with the X4 cam, 102mm bore and 11:1.

I hadn't thought about the extra starting power needed for a longer stroke but it makes sense, especially with a higher compression ratio. If I had to start over on a new build, I'd probably have gone with the stroker crank and a flat top piston to get a better bore to stroke ratio. If memory serves me, Bill J. said that this engine is ridiculously under square.

Catman,
One and the same Martin Sweet...Sure hope they are still around..visited there a few years ago,(a couple of times) When Mark (aka Wonky) was building the STMZ baggie...
Was offered a spin around the block on it...WELL NOT IN THE RAIN w/gravel..they'd just finished it,,,sounded like a fuel drag car when fired up...had a really neat dual exhaust on it
that snaked its way through the frame...I'll not forget it for sure.....twin FCR's ....it was sweet, no pun

Was going through the gallery (teamslipstream.co.uk)
The pages of pictures offer allot of good information and yes, it's great to reflect.

No doubt that Slipstreams mz build is part of my inspiration (and knowledge base) in my baggy project. Before I joined this site as a contributing(?) member, I spent countless hours wading through various threads in search of solid info. Hard to miss the knowledge that Mark and Bill J. (to name just a couple) had to offer. Went to Slipstreams site and looked plenty at their album. Slipstreams site is also the place where I found access to the shop manual for my bike. Nice to see the break down for forks, wiring diagrams, etc.....Of course my take on cosmetics and state of tune has my own individual variations. Looking back, there are already things that I would do different, such as Mikuni carbs instead of the Kheihns, Skorp style exhaust (collector under the engine, muffler carried lower on bike, BIGGER dia head pipes), etc.....I would still spring for a set of Skorp style head pipes, if I could find them, in order to get the exhaust away from the acc pump on the kheihns. Clearance in that area is my only real complaint about the carbs. They were the logical choice for me (we are a SUDCO dealer), as I alredy have experience tuning them....I wonder if no response from the Slipstream folks is simply due to a server differences, or some logistical problem like that......Thanks for all the info!!!!!

Skorp headers....thats an interesting subject...have you tried Tim Barker? last year he was going to make more...also check out the Off The Road.de(otr.de) site as they have some head pipes for the
new Xt66or that will probably fit....and reasonable price...
fortunate for me I have a set of Barkers that were converted to 2-1.as yet not mounted on my Skorp....

Headers? Here's a set for you. They fit perfectly on my Skorp and you can order the parts individually should you damage just one piece. http://www.projection-components.co.uk/ ... -210-p.asp

Catman,

"Looking back, there are already things that I would do different, such as Mikuni carbs instead of the Kheihns"
Why the Mikunis?

I do recall from previous posts that the metal tube under the backbone had to be shortened for clearance on the flatslides that your currently using.

I also noticed that Slipstream used 39s, great for that engine build. It seems 35s might be a better choice for a milder engine build.

Opinions?

I think you would have to do major port mods to take full advantage of the 39's, and that would make performance suffer at lower throttle settings. You want the velocity of air in the intakes to remain as high as possible for whatever style of riding you are going to do. So if you are building a street machine, go with less aggressive porting and the 35's. If you are going to have the throttle pegged most of the time, go with a drag port and 39's.

OMC and edfmaniac, first of all I will spell KEIHIN correctly.....just realized that. Sorry. By using Raptor intake manifolds, the carbs are tipped down far enough to solve any clearance issues from that frame brace, although I had to peen divots in the frame cradle rear down tubes (just after they come off the large frame center tube) so the carb tops wouldnt hit at that spot. This also gave enough room to remove/reinstall the carbs without removing the intake manifolds. This allowed me to use the Raptor air boots(upside down and swapped side for side), which then allowed use of the GSXR 1000 style K&N (coupled to the air boots w/small lengths of exhaust tubing). Carbs also cleared fuel tank bottom by removing the throttle cable holder and rotating it downward to the next available mounting spot on the bracket. A small cradle fabbed from alum flat stock supports all this nicely right in front of the battery "box". (Now running a "Ballistic" EVO2 battery, 275CCA, and VERY light, (Lithium Iron) plus maintains charge much better than the old stock YB9L-A2,) To answer the question about the MIKUNIS, they meter the fuel more precisely if jetted correctly,( plus the advantage of clearing my stock head pipes as they pass by this area,( but my candy is already spent on the carbs at this time..... Indeed the reason I selected 35mm carbs is to maintain intake velocity at lower throttle openings/engine speeds. My port work on the cyl head also reflects this, as most of the work is in the valve pockets and seat areas, with matching of the in. manifolds, and a modest enlargement of in. and ex. ports. I tried to build this engine as a balanced package for daily use, and not as a "shotgun motor", Catman

OMC, I realized from your previous post that you were talking about clearing the nipple on the underside of the frame back bone that connects the oil tank to the crank case via a length of hose (Probably to equalize crank case pressure w/the front frame downtube/oil tank?) The Raptor intake manifolds have a different angle to compensate for the canted forward cylinder that they sport, and this worked in my favor for clearing that little tube/nipple. All these fine Raptor parts came to me thanks to an engine that sheared the crank drive gear key, and aireated the crank case severely. Sorry for any confusion.........Regards, Catman.
