back again...

anyway another phase tonite.

i ordered some heat shrink to install over the spokes... what i originally was going to do was replace out all of the spokes, but after seeing what the spokes look like when covered in heat shrink i am well pleased...

as i was in bristol today taking my son to university open day, I got myself a heat gun one of those cheapy silverline items £15.. with a 3 year warranty...

and when i got home opened my packages...

bearing wrong size !!!!! grrr grrrr have to send them back now, or order the correct ones.. more details on the other of my posts...

did trial lace up my wheel last nite, and managed to get all the spokes in ok.. just need to order some replacements for some of the real bad ones... and some nipples, and get my hub primered in acid etch, and gloss black and we be ready to install the new bearings, and get lacing, trueing and heatshrinking the spokes...

I will get some pics posted if theres any interest...??

if you have the time and patience its easy to do.. most people take the easy option, and send them off. I figure as the weather is crap anyway, and the bike is sorn with no m.o.t. I may as well have a go... theres loads of clips on youtube, thats what i have copied off...I was going to get the hub powder coated i could have had it done for £20. but i think with powder coating they seem to lay it on a bit thick, and this requires drilling out the spoke holes, this could chenge the angle of the spokes ever so slightly unlesss done really carefully with a hand drill. there is a sequence to rebuilding the wheel, start always with the longest outside spokes, and then figure out the rest as for truieing... i need to make a stand first then figure out what to do... as before.. youtube is your best friend, or get someone to true it up later.. I figure i can rebuild the wheel my self without scatching the hub if i do it... I may take it and get it trued up, as the most damage will only be the spoke nipples then, and not my freshly painted hub, and polished rim...

Sending them off ( or luckily I have two local places that have done wheels for me in the past)is the easy option but when you are working on bikes that are never going to be worth that much it seems a waste. Didn't mind paying silly money to get the wheels on my Guzzi T3 rebuilt, but when it comes to a Supa5 MZ it would cost a third of its value!

bought a cheap halogen heater from BM bargains for £8 does a great job of warming up the paint, and the hub...

some old plasterboard i had knocking around in the shed made a nice little booth and keeps the fumes going up the chimney of the extractor.

I initially give the hub a real good wash in the sink with washing up liquid, and then baked it in the oven to get it up to temperature.. applied a few coats of etch primer, and going to give it 24 hrs to harden up a bit, then on to flatting it back a bit next coat of high build and a gloss topcoat.. should be a few days...

my old monitor turntable was great for turning the hub around to get to the other side.. the disk threaded holes blocked up with 6 screws, 3 downwards, and the other 3 at 120 degrees upwards apart to rest the hub on.... the old bearings were kept in to avoid getting too much paint on the bearing surfaces...

anyway heres the pics...
