My understanding - it was used to mount something for the original xte 660

You can thread a longer bolt into it and yank it off ... except it comes off easy by hand.

On earlier versions of the engine (XT600, I think), the clutch cable was routed down the LHS of the engine and fitted into the groove on this casing. The now unused threaded hole held a clip which held it in place.
