ETZ 250 engine in TS 250/1 rolling chassis

Postby costellon » Thu May 22, 2014 3:42 pm

Hi all !

I recently purchased a 1980 basket case (in a box) TS 250/1 with an ETZ engine badly fitted. The engine had a damaged crankcase so I completely rebuilt it as a matter of course. I carefully stripped the loom off the chassis and dickied up everything and am now at the stage where I have refitted everything but am trying to iron out the creases in the wiring as I don't know if the previous owner knew what he was doing with the wiring.
The wiring to the ignition switch is "as original" and it appears to have a regulator unit off a Jap bike (8 wires) badly spliced into it and it is uncertain if the bike ever ran with this setup.
I would like to know if anyone has any experience with using this type of regulator in this setup and if so, how do I correctly wire it. I am uncertain if it is a regulator/rectifier or just a regulator.
If you are interested, please follow this link to see images of my progress so far: http://s1109.photobucket.com/user/seani ... Z%20engine

This is a link to images of my generator and regulator: http://s1109.photobucket.com/user/seani ... g%20system

It's very frustrating as I have come so far and literally have only a few hours work ahead of me to have it running. If anyone out there could help me out on this one i'd greatly appreciate it _ AS IN _ WHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY TO WIRE THIS REGULATOR INTO THE SYSTEM THAT i HAVE ?

I have other questions regarding setting up the 2 stroke pump etc ... but i'd like to sort out the sparking and charging aspect first - by running it on premix until I iron out all the kinks.

Thank you for your time and ride safe !

By far the easiest, and most reliable way would be to dump the unknown unit and fit a rectifier pack and loaf tin from an ETZ.

In fact, I wouldn't fit a loaf tin, I'd fit a Durite voltage regulator which is meant to fit a Volvo, but fits straight in - google sweller's site for details. I've just fitted one to an ETZ125 I'm rebuilding - £13.

Thanks guys. I'll be getting an electronic ignition and a rectifier/regulator from Poland in a few weeks time. All I want to do is fire the bike up in the meantime and do a bit of snagging. In a past life I worked as a motorcycle mechanic and remember that it was quite common for the lads to throw these "jap" regulators into the etz's - the honda 250N regulator being the favourite for some reason. I used to know how to wire one of these in but I have long since forgotton. I had hoped that there were some old school MZ'ers out there that might recall this practice. This is my fifth MZ and my last etz had a 250n reg also - God knows where it is now.
My question still stands, does anyone know how to wire in the regulator in the images please ?
Thanks.
