That brake plate looks a little different to mine. One thing is that it is missing the little hatch for monitoring the brake pad wear.

Yes. I have had the same thing happen in my village. The other day I parked behind a local residents GT40. The photographers migrated over to my parking spot and started taking photos of the ETZ.

Anyway, have you tried the bike yet?

I'd guess there not many of those bikes around there. Personally I live very close to the German border, where there are still quite a few MZ's (met a couple a few months back at my Luxembourg filling station), but even here in the Ardennes, when we sit on a terrace of a cafe having a drink, people look at the bike & often approach me.

No I haven't started it yet; life events keep getting in the way... and I did spend a little time and energy on 2 other oldies over Christmas /New year. I now have this old girl legal to ride :

It has "conditional" registration as an Historical Vehicle , which allows me 60 days riding per year as well as attending Club events. I have both of the old BMW's registered this way


I'm waiting on a fuse block upgrade for the ETZ to arrive and then I'll connect all the wires and charge the battery. Then Ill start the motor.
I will still need to sort out the clutch adjustment before road testing


There are very few MZ's here in Australia.

Though I'm not much into BMW boxers (flat twins), that looks like a very nice bike!

Here an historic registration also used to come with all sorts of restrictions, but a while back those were lifted; now all it means is that I can't use the MZ for work (like the delivery of newspapers or pizza, the man said). Insurance is cheaper, and tax would be cheaper if I'd have to pay tax for it, but here bikes below 250cc are tax free anyway.

your better off with older bikes if there a good one
here in the USA the stuff all cost a small fortune to fix if it breaks
the old ones you can fix your self
the BMW shop close to me closed 90 mile round trip so back to fix it my self

Its hot as hell down-under these last few days, fish dying in rivers, flying foxes falling out of trees, ozone level health alerts inland temperatures in the 40's. Just nice to spend some time in the garage where its a little cooler.
My project starts to take shape


But the bearing in the clutch activator was not seated and I couldn't fit the circlip. So off comes the clutch cover again....

and I broke the gasket



I have some oil jointing paper so I spent this evening making a new gasket and refitting the clutch cover.

Now I realize that the bike did not have a gear lever when I got it and I never ordered one.

I would have used the gear lever to select top gear then hold the brake on whilst I applied the 90Nm ? to the tacho drive nut. I also have to torque down the Vape rotor on the other side of the crank.
When my head cools off I'll try and think of another way to hold the crank while I tighten the nuts

Those gaskets are easy to break. Best to lay the bike on its side when installing. Yes it has been hot. I was out on the ETZ today looking for the stingray swamp swimming hole in Penrose forest. Did not find it so had to ride back dusty and sweaty.

I wonder if the gear lever off the DR (in the background) would fit?

That looks like the top of the gasket.. In which case you'd likely find no oil leaks from it as it is the top of the engine, so long as it is held in place well (with grease or something).

But indeed I have made them in the past too.



In terms of locking the crank.. I use rope down the plug hole. This stops the piston getting to TDC so it locks.

Yes, your temperatures down there have made it to the news here - not a good sign.

In the past I've also used the gear/brake method, but actually I like Blurredman's idea to stop the crank rotating better, in view of the gear ratio & risk to the gearbox. But best not stop it close to TDC, then the forces get real big.

Maybe make a stopper through the plug hole? Could meet the piston half-way the stroke, where forces are least. I have never tried that, but I might make one.

Stick the broken gasket to one side with silicone (Loctite blue or the like), making sure to fill the gap; should be OK.
