Acquired a 1959 RT 125/3 and am having some difficulty insuring it as the the companies I approached don't recognise it as a MZ model. Has anyone had the same problem and who did they use?

Well, good luck with that one.........
I can find no UK importer/concessionaire for MZ in 1959, meaning that any potential insurer would regard it as a "grey" or personal import and therefore lacking actuarial info. or guidance. This makes insurance companies very wary.
I suppose your only hope is with one of the classic bike insurance specialists, who are better prepared to deal with bikes of which there are very low numbers in existence.
Unfortunately, if or when you manage to get cover you may be surprised by how much it will cost. I have insurance on a MZ ETZ125 - a common and readily identifiable model, and my renewal premium for this year showed a 42.5%% increase over last year's price - this despite no accidents / no claims / no convictions / + 1 extra year's NCB.
Please keep us posted with your efforts.

I've no experience of this personally, but Peter James insurance lists the DKW RT125, which is closely related. Worth giving them a call.

I have one quote so far from Footman James, is that different to Peter James? £140 Third party fire and theft. Is that good? I mentioned that it is basically a 125 Bantam which they obviously recognised.
I have a 1949 BSA insured with the RAC through Highway but they have not been able to help so far, still waiting for a response.
Interesting the DKW 125 is recognised.
Few more phone calls tomorrow.

Different company, usually cheaper, but you might have to join a listed classics club eg mzrc riders to qualify.

Assuming you are not a youngster that seems a lot. I only pay about eighty pound a year, fully comp, for my MZ Mastiff, and about the same for my Fantic 250 trail bike as well.

The information I am getting from the insurers I contacted is that to insure one classic bike,( which is the worst scenario), of this caliber and value fully comp. I will have to pay £140 ish. Apparently that's a common fee across the industry. two or three bikes would only cost £30/40 extra which sounds a lot better.
Have gone with Peter James £139.62. fully comp.
Still think its expensive for say 2000 miles a year running round the back roads.
