Oil Filter

Postby RR » Mon Aug 16, 2004 4:22 pm

Is the Baghira oil filter an MZ only item, or are there compatible substitutes from other manufacturers?

Thanks

There's a Fram that's suitable... I forget which one, but it's the same one that fits whichever model-years of the Raptor that do NOT use the spin-on style filter... or maybe it was the XT... oh hell - I forget but maybe motardina will jump-in and save me from my bad memory?

Hi

I have been looking at the RAptor spin-off oil filter. Has anyone looked to see if this can be fitted to the MZ660 and how much the bits would be?
Standard oil filter is the same as the early 80's 250 and 500 XT's

Yamaha part # 4X7-13440-90, any yam dealer should have them in stock.
as to the raptor spin-on conversion, I would reccomend against it, for 2 reasons: To make the coversion you'd have to replace the entire right engine cover on the motor, and I'm not 100% sure it would fit or be the same internally. Second, if the bike were to fall on that side, theres a good chance it could damage the oil filter, causing a leak or hindering oilflow, which is not a problem you have on a 4-wheeler

Fair comment on the conversion. I just thought it would make oil changes easier as changing the standard filter can be a bit messy.

This whole post demonstrates how useful an interchangable parts table would be on this site for Baggy Parts! MZ should almost post it!

I just did a tune up on my 97 Skorpion here are a few part numbers that may help out.

Fram oil filter: CH6005
K&N oil filter: KN-145

NGK spark plug: DPR8EA-9 Gap between 32&35 (according to manual).

Hope this helps.

I did try doing one, but there are so many parts to find that it would work best if we made it a sticky and let everyone have a go at it!

Do a search for interchangable parts list on this site and you should find it!
I will only run out of ways of modify the Baggy when it weighs less that 100 kg and runs 100 bhp at the back wheel!!

The OEM oil filter, Yamaha part number 4X7-13440-90 is common to the XT500, XT550, XT600, TT600, SRX600, XT250, XT350, TT250, TT350, XV500 Virago, XVS 650 V Star models, TDM850 and others. It doesn't matter what bike, just ask for it by part number - they'll know it.

I have ordered 4 Perf-form filters directly from Per-form, because they use filter media that filters smaller particles than the standard cellulose media. They cost me about the same or less than the OEM Yamaha filter but I would buy them if they cost more.

Fram I would not use. If you do a search for [Fram "oil filter" cardboard], you will see why; there has been an "issue" with Fram going back many years, to do with their cardboard end-pieces.

Purolator PremiumPLUS ML16805 is also a superior filter. (PremiumPLUS is their intermediate level filter; their part number that corresponds to the Yamaha part number.)

I revisited some of this information / these stories / last week because people on advrider were talking about the Scotts stainless steel re-usable filters. So if you want to get into it - it is quite interesting and it's always good to learn a bit more, to get some technical information instead of just opinions, which are usually based on advertising, this will get you started:

At the end of the article there are links to articles by various people who dissected and examined various oil filters. Great stuff. :D
