When i was a little they were great about 1955 ... my grand mother raised them and made all kinds of stuff from them ...
the ones i like were called BEEFSTAKES and were great stright up
take a bite out of one and sprinkle canning salt on it and eat it like a big apple but these things were the size of a grapefruit
i raise then even today but the store bought stuff is nasty and i very seldom use them
in the winter we eat ones we have canned from the summer in stews and chilis
and a friend makes some into mexican salsa
if you can find a seed place in the UK that sells BEEFSTEAK type
get some seed and try them in a big flower box up on the roof so some one does not NICK the whole crop
and try one just befor it is ripe but still green ...sliced up geeen and fried rolled in flour taste is like fried okra rolled in flower and fried in olive oil...
red neck country cookin at its best
now where is the one i picked today you guys made me hungry
